What is Age Calculator?
An age calculator computes the exact age between a birth date and the current date. Unlike simple year-based calculations that just subtract birth year from current year, this calculator accounts for the month and day to give you the precise age in years, months, and days. It also provides additional insights: your zodiac sign, Chinese zodiac, next birthday countdown, and life progress based on average life expectancy.
Beyond basic age calculation, this tool shows your total days, weeks, and hours since birth, giving you a complete picture of how long you have been alive. All calculations happen entirely in your browser — no data is ever sent to any server, ensuring your birth date remains private.
Common Use Cases
- Checking your exact age for forms, applications, or legal documents
- Calculating age differences between two dates for planning purposes
- Finding out how many days old you are for fun milestone tracking
- Discovering your zodiac sign and Chinese zodiac based on your birth date
- Counting down to upcoming birthdays and celebrations
- Tracking life progress against average life expectancy
How Age is Calculated
Age is calculated by comparing the year, month, and day of the birth date against the current date. If the current month and day are before the birth month and day, we borrow one year and adjust the months and days accordingly. The formula accounts for varying days in each month and automatically handles leap years through the JavaScript Date object. For example, if today is May 30, 2026 and you were born on January 1, 1990, you are 36 years, 4 months, and 29 days old. The total days, hours, and weeks are computed from the difference in milliseconds between the two dates.
Zodiac Sign FAQ
- What zodiac system does this tool use?
- This tool uses the tropical zodiac system, the most common Western astrological system. It assigns zodiac signs based on calendar date ranges. Note that the tropical and sidereal (astronomical) zodiac systems have slightly different date ranges due to the precession of the equinoxes.
- What are the zodiac sign date ranges?
- Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19), Taurus (Apr 20–May 20), Gemini (May 21–Jun 20), Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22), Leo (Jul 23–Aug 22), Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22), Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22), Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21), Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21), Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19), Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18), Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20).
Chinese Zodiac FAQ
- What is the Chinese zodiac?
- The Chinese zodiac (Shēngxiào) is a repeating 12-year cycle of animal signs. Each year is associated with a specific animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar. Your Chinese zodiac sign is determined by your birth year according to the Chinese lunar calendar.
- How is my Chinese zodiac sign determined?
- The cycle begins with Rat in 2020 (and 2008, 1996, etc.), followed by Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar. For example, 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, 2025 is the Year of the Snake, and so on. Simply divide your birth year by 12 and find your remainder to determine your sign.
